LYONS Family History
Lyons is an Irish surname with a variety of origins from the Irish ? Liath?in of County Cork and ? Laighin of County Galway. It is also be a variant of the typically Scottish surname Lyon. The resemblance to several placenames in France commonly suggests a French origin for the surname but the origin is typically Gaelic.Select Audience

Looking for clues on where my great grandfather, Patrick Joseph Lyons, was from in Ireland. Family stories suggest he could be from Cork, Galway, Longford, or Roscommon. Both of his wives were from Roscommon. He was a mason who immigrated to the USA around 1865-1870 and settled in Providence and Cranston, Rhode Island. From approx. 1885 to his death in 1930, he lived in New Haven, Connecticut.

Trying to understand how the Lyons' clan moved to Galway, Ireland. Specifically Patrick Lyons. He immigrated to New York around 1850-1870, probably from the potato famine. He settled around the Adirondack mountains. He married Ellen O'Connor. He was Catholic and buried in St. Mary's cemetery in Oneida, NewYork.
